it's been too long!

I have been slacking in the blogging department,  at least this blog.   My tattooing blog has been updated much more.
I do have one piece of news as far as my "normal" art (action) goes,  New Years Eve I will be painting live in Whistler village from 7-11PM at Maurice Young Place. The event is a free family festival organized by the Whistler Arts Council.  Stop by and say hello if you are in the area. If you are not in the area then please send me good vibes.   Thanks and happy New Year.
Pics of the event and my piece will come later (I promise)

some news

It has been a while since my last post,  and it isn't because I have been up on the mountains snowboarding,  as some of you lucky people have been due to Whistler Mountains early opening due to it's epic snow year so far.  I have been busy with some travels around British Columbia as well as some freelance art work, and some personal projects.
First off I was in Revelstoke, BC for two weeks tattooing at PINZ Boardshop and Bodyart.  It was busy to say the least and I got to work on my birthday.  I didn't mind at all,  I was there to work and the lovely folks of Revelstoke put me work for sure.  You can see some of the tattoos I made while there by clicking this link.  While I was in Revelstoke I got to pick the last remaining chanterelles of the season before they became covered with snow.
Last night I finished some design work which I am very happy about,  it is for a website about video games and the client is from Texas.   I will post a link to the site in a future post for you to check it out if you feel like it.

Sherpas movie premiere

Last night was pretty amazing... a huge turnout from local folks as well as Vancouver folks...  the Sherpas did a wicked job producing their new movie entitled "All. I. Can"   The editing was unreal,  the filming was unreal,  the music was unreal!   ha ha
1000+ people were in attendance ,  Feet Banks did an awesome job as MC.
After the movie there was live music by Tennessee #  and then Mat the Alien did a video set.

brand new artwork

I have been busy lately creating art for tattoo clients as well as painting four canvases for a movie premiere tomorrow night in Whistler, BC.    Rocky Mountain Sherpas are showing their brand new ski movie entitled "ALL. I. CAN"   The world premiere is being held at the Whistler conference centre tomorrow night,  it is a ticketed event and it's SOLD OUT!!!  1000 lucky people are going to be there to look at the art and watch the movie...  and party during the after party with Tennessee Three and Matt the Alien playing tunes till the sun comes up.
Here's a peak of my art wall and the new pieces I made.
Enjoy...

recent happenings late summer 2011

I'm back from a trip out East to see my family out by the lake,  fish and relax.   It was a good week for sure but as always it wasn't long enough.

I'm back now in Whistler and have been busy creating five new works of art for the ALL.I.CAN world premiere happening in Whistler on September 23rd, 2011, brought to you by Sherpas Cinema.      click here to check out the event details for the day and night.

I was asked once again to organize the art exhibit for the 10th annual B-grade horror movie festival put on by Heavy Hitting Films here in Whistler.    The gala night is one night only, October 30th, 2011  Every year it has sold out,  so get your tickets as soon as they become available.   It's gonna be amazing!   I'm lining up a sick group of artists to show art in the lobby/bar area to keep the rowdy crowd entertained until the theatre opens and the movies start.

My friend and fellow artist Arin Seiber asked me to participate in her Hallowe'en art show in Vancouver on Friday October 21st at SOHO Billiards.  Of course I said yes,  it's going to be one hell of a party and a chance to showcase some new art as well.

Stay tuned for more updates in the near future.

Tiny Monsters... Mini Creatures

I was part of the Function Junction "Block Party" two weeks ago along with a bunch of other artists, all of which had their art in various businesses in Whistler's industrial park/art hub called Function Junction.
I shared a unique venue with three other local artists, Randoid, Arne Gutmann and the Incredible Amoeba.
These are some of the brand new charcoal renderings of mini creatures/tiny monsters I created for the event.

The event was a success with a whole bunch of people turning out and supporting the arts in Whistler.
Fellow artist and good friend of mine, Arne Gutmann, wrote a little something about the event in his weekly column (every Friday) on www.whistlerisawesome.com  a blog about the Whistler lifestyle and the people who choose to live here.
Check it out,  "like" it on facebook, and keep reading.

Block Party pics

I took these photos of my paintings on display at the Function Block Party this past Friday night in Whistler, BC.
Two walls were full of smaller paintings and drawings.  The last wall was full of the mechanical squids which I had shown during the State of the Art Exhibit during the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

The show went really well with art selling,  connections made,  and good times had by all.

Block Party '11

Function Junction, Whistlers own light industrial park is hosting it's annual "BLOCK PARTY"  with food, live music, live art and of course new artwork by Whistler artists.   I have the pleasure to be showcasing 10 new works of art,  all small if not tiny pieces, housed in ornamental frames I have collected over the past couple years.   Besides the new pieces I will be showing some new(er) pieces which have been in House of RTS Gallery in Squamish, BC and were at State of the Art during the World Ski and Snowboard festival 2011.
The Incredible Amoeba, Randoid, and Arne Gutmann will be showing with me at our venue at the south cul de sac.    Stop by and say hello,   have a drink and buy some art...
My work will be posted here very soon,   check back to see it if you happen to live out of town or miss the show.

Right back at 'er

Vince dog and I arrived back in Whistler early Sunday morning (7AM) from our tattooing vacation to Revelstoke, BCand got back to work unpacking the van, tidying up the studio and getting things ready at Black Ohm Tattoos for work this week.

Last night I met with Liz of BassCoastProject and Andy Dittrich to discuss building one of the stages,  which I got to design.  We are all so excited about bringing one of my characters to life this year.   If you were ever wondering about BassCoastProject,  get your ass down to Squamish Valley this year and check it out.   It is going to be THE music festival to be at this summer.

Whistler Arts Councill is hosting "Artwalk" Thursday night at various venues in Whistler village.   I will be walking about with Vince dog checking out the art and the people.

Friday, August 5th is the Function Junction block party...  where local businesses host different artists and their art work.  As well as the art there is going to be food vendors and drinks flowing.
Myself, Arne Gutmann, Randy "RANDOID" Smith and The Incredible Amoeba are showing our artwork at the south end of Function across from Whistler Happy Pets, Whistlers only and best, pet food store.   So be sure to stop by and say hi to us Friday night.   You know there is going to be some sort of debauchery going down.

Revelstoke has been fun but...

It's almost time for me and Vinnie dog to leave and hit the road for the coast.   Thanks to all who got tattooed by me, and for asking when I will be back.   Thanks to all of you who made this trip worth while and special.

travels this summer

With this spring being so cold and lasting so long I am craving warmer weather,  I am craving summer.   The next few months are going to be full of travels for me and I like the idea of moving around some.

One week from now I will be going on a two week trip out to the lovely, laid back town of Revelstoke, B.C. to do some tattooing and mountain biking.   A week after I return to Whistler I am heading up the Squamish valley to help build one of the stages I designed for Bass Coast Project,   which by the way is happening on the very last weekend of July,  better get your ticket soon.  The weekend following that I will be heading to .Shambhala for a few days of fun in the sun and trees.     After that maybe a trip to the sunshine coast for a bit of biking.

Then a quick week long trip home to see the family,  and that will wrap up my summer travel plans...  all the while drawing and tattooing and creating art for a few art shows in the works for the fall

Busy, busy, busy

13 years of good and bad

Hard to believe it has been 13 years that I have been making SkullBoy stickers in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.  13 years of handing out stacks of stickers to friends who have gone out over the world traveling,   all of us peeling and sticking,   trading them for drinks,  trading them for food,  trading them for weed and giving them away for smiles.    Some friends went to Australia, to New Zealand, others drove across Canada, others down the west coast to Mexico, Peru, Chili and some flew to England, Germany, Sweden and Russia.   Peeling and sticking, peeling and sticking.
I took a walk the other day and saw the first sticker I ever peeled and stuck in Whistler,  it's still up there.
To commemorate my 13 years I am working on a t-shirt design.   it won't be available in stores.  Like the stickers it will be available through me.    I will post the design when finished, but for now you get a sneak peek at the design...

I will post pics of the printing process and the finished shirts.

Painted Skull

In case some of you didn't know,   I have a whole bunch of skulls at my studio,  I found many of them and others were gifted to me by friends or people in the know.
One such find was a black bear skull from the woods around Whistler.   It must be from a yearling as it isn't very big.
A few months ago I felt inspired to paint it...   so with a couple friends in mind I created this...

green thumb

So some of you may know that I have been (gorilla) gardening for close to ten years in Function Junction,  where I live in Whistler.   My friend Brian Forbes and I built our first garden on the edge of the swamp on the outskirts of Function which was a pretty sweet location as it was self watering,  the only downside of it was the amount of slugs that ate the veggies we were trying to grow for ourselves.   Forbes had to get back surgery one year and moved back East to recover leaving me to tend the plot myself,  and battle the army of slugs,  which in the end proved to be too much for one person.    So I let nature overrun that garden,  which is still beside that swamp,  the damn slugs can have it  (as well as anyone else who has a green thumb,  there are some nice raised grow boxes filled with soil still there).
I moved to a new space in Function and have since built a new garden out back,  where there are no slugs,  and plenty of sunshine and shade.    I have planted mainly lettuces and kale,  berries and violas and chives,  and plan to plant a couple varieties of parsley.   It's mainly plants I intend to juice (in a juice blended with apples, ginger, beets, carrots, etc.) and for salads ,  which I normally buy but which I don't want to purchase anymore.
Yesterday I turned the soil, added manure and planted it.   Over the spring and summer and fall I will document the plot and share it with you.
These photos were taken yesterday after I planted and watered.

Down She Goes!!!

I was commissioned about a month ago to paint a painting of a tall ship being pulled underwater by an octopus.   That was about the only direction I was given, besides the basic size of canvas.  I liked the concept, felt it challenging and decided to go for it.   Below is what I came up with.
12x18 (aprox.) inches,  laquer and acrylic paint on canvas.

various "Luchadors"

two weeks ago Blind Mute Productions had their 7th art exhibit entitled "la Violenta Tormenta de Arte" in Whistler,   it was a great night,  the people who came out to support and check out the art and music were all in great spirits.
Let's just say that the mexican wrestlers were out in full force that night.

Tomorrow night in Vancouver , at The Beaumont Studios,  is the second showing of this fun exhibit.  Doors at 8pm
This is what I created for the exhibit...
gessoed canvas pieces,  roughly 4x7 inches ,  gessoed with graphite drawings.

they are priced at $40.00 each

These are first editions and are in runs of 50.

I chose 7 paintings to make into prints and plan to make some of my other paintings into prints in the future.

BUSY BUSY BUSY

these last couple weeks have been SO very busy for me...
-first off was getting everything ready for the State of the Art exhibit in Whistler, BC on April 15th.  WHat a night,  what a gala opening.     a bunch of artists in attendance and drinks were flowing,  a bunch of artworks sold.
-the very next night was the Toad Hall art show in Whistler village and it was very busy and a different crowd then I am used to at art exhibits I normally am involved with.

-the rest of my time will be spent working at Black Ohm Tattoos until Friday when I will be busy setting up a MASSIVE space for Blind Mute Productions annual art exhibit,  this years' is called "la Violenta Tormenta de Arte"   it's a mexican wrestling art show/party.   where we have 30+ artists (local and international) showcasing their artworks.  Nelson's own YAN ZOMBIE will be spinning tunes as well as Squamish's LIBRARIAN and Victorias JAKE "DESTRO" SPADE and Whistler's RUSS-2-FARI.

Paper This at the Beaumont Studios in Vancouver

I'm back from the "Paper This" art exhibit that my friend Arne Gutmann organized at the Beaumont Studios/Gallery in Vancouver Friday night.  The show is running for a three weeks.  The space is awesome,   I have never been to the Beaumont before but hopefully I will make it down there more often for events.
Quite a few people came out for opening night,   and there were most of the participating Whistler artists in attendance.  I noticed a couple red dots , which is a very good thing.   More people should buy artwork from artists,   support them as much as you can,  or at the very least tell them you like their work.
Thanks to Charmaine, Jude, and Amelia of the Beaumont Studios for a great night

Paper This! art show

Tonight at the Beaumont Studio/Gallery in Vancouver ...
"PAPER THIS"
a group art exhibit put on by Arne Gutmann
over 20 Whistler artists showing work on large paper sheets made by Arne Gutmann.
8PM -2AM

The Beaumont Studios
316 West 5th Avenue (@ Alberta)
Vancouver, BC

Multidisciplinary artist Arne Gutmann’s newest brainchild “Paper This” is an experiment in recycled mediums. After approaching over 30 notable Whistler artists from a variety of backgrounds, Gutmann created custom paper canvases from a variety of materials including recycled ski lift passes, birch bark. comic books, and cigarette packs.

Arne’s instructions to the artists were simple,

“Keep it vertical and try not destroy the original integrity of the paper, no cutting or ripping it, full size, 15 x 19 inch sheets. I also wanted the paper to not be too altered so people could actually see the paper under and around their art. A frame if you will. All the sheets are completely unique, there are no two alike. Many of the pieces were created with the help of the artists.”

With over 30 participants from a variety of backgrounds, “Paper This” is a unique artistic experiment.

Artists include:

Stephen Vogler, Writer

G.D. Maxwell, Writer

Goldfinger, Artist

Chris Macleay, Graphic Artist

Five years ago, Gutmann started experimenting with different techniques and materials to make paper. Initially working with recycled materials, he later moved to the heavy production of raw fibres, mostly hemp but also a wide variety of local flora such as: Burdock, Mulberry, Kozo, and Juniper. He has also experimented with unconventional materials including money, old boxers, hemp, cigarette packs, receipts and McDonald’s wrappers.

Having lived in Whistler for 15 years, photographer Arne Gutmann has become a staple in the Whistler art scene. His work has been published in a variety of ski and snowboard magazines, lifestyle and architecture publications and is a regular contributor to art shows in and around Whistler.

“I shoot almost anything but my forte is people, whether they fly, ski, board, bike.”

This is the second show of this type that Arne has curated, the first being in Whistler in 2009.

Happenings...

With winter in full force in Whistler,  I have been getting out some with Vinnie dog , we have been snowshoeing up and down mountains on our days off work.   Vince has such long hair he gets little balls of snow stuck all over his legs and stomach.  It's pretty hilarious to see,  he walks like he's bowlegged.
Tattooing is slow yet steady,  no surprises there.    I am almost caught up on my drawings and am waiting to do some inking on my clients.    If you are thinking of getting tattooed com eon down to Black Ohm Tattoos and speak to me.
I was invited to participate in the "State of the ART" art exhibit during the World Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler this April.   I have been busy painting and making art for that.   I was given a 8 foot x 8 foot wall space to hang my art and to customize if I wish.    I have a pretty good idea as to what I'm going to do;  I actually have a couple ideas as to what I'm going to do,   now the tough part...  deciding on one.
My company Blind Mute Productions,  which I co-own with a couple friends of mine,   is getting ready with our annual art show/party,   also taking place during the World Ski and Snowboard Festival.   Artists have been invited,  the musical entertainment picked,   it's going to be a great time.   We are hoping to bring the whole exhibit to  Vancouver and then Victoria.   It's going to be an awesome summer.
At the end of this month I am going to do a guest artist spot tattooing at PINZ Boardshop in Revelstoke BC.   If you're in Revelstoke the last week of March stop in and say hi.    I hear they have been getting DUMPED on there.   The snowboarding and skiing is going to be sick!!

That's all my news for now,  take care and stay warm this winter....   I am getting pumped for biking season and warmer weather,  it's right around the corner

new landscape...

So there is a store in Whistler called Katmandu,  they sell everything under the sun;  from bikes, snowboards, glass pipes and rolling papers to wallets,  liquor flasks and guitars.  If you need it, they probably will have it.
Rusty, the owner, wanted the walls painted and was looking for local artists to help out and have a chance to showcase their work.   I told him I would like to spice up his store some.
Last night was the date of the painting "party".  Six local artists showed up and went to work from 9PM on...

This is what I created for Katmandu.  It's a tripy landscape.
I used Ironlak aerosol paint . compliments of Liks
